Benchmark Sensex trimmed early gains to close marginally higher while Nifty settled flat in choppy trade on Tuesday as gains in auto shares were offset by selling pressure in banking and energy shares. The 30-share BSE barometer closed marginally up by 37.08 points or 0.06 per cent to 60,978.75 with 15 of its stocks ending in green and the rest in red. Benchmark Sensex declined 224 points on Wednesday, snapping its four-session winning streak, mainly due to sell-off in IT and pharma counters amid rising concerns over possible aggressive interest rate hikes to tame high inflation. Investors' wealth has jumped Rs 9,57,201.52 crore in the last three days of rally in equity market as stocks continued to march higher amid the Budget-led euphoria. The 30-share BSE benchmark on Wednesday zoomed 695.76 points or 1.18 per cent to settle at 59,558.33 as the post-Budget rally continued. This is the third day of rally in equities and helped by the optimism, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies jumped Rs 9,57,201.52 crore to Rs 2,70,64,905.75 crore in three days.
Strong performance by technology (tech) stocks in the current year has led to superior returns in information technology (IT) sector funds. On average, tech funds have given returns of 63.53 per cent in the past one year, the highest among all categories of funds, reveals the data from Value Research. Market participants say that Covid-19 has accelerated the growth of IT companies with rise in demand for digitisation.
From the 30 Sensex pack, Hindustan Unilever fell by nearly 6 per cent after the FMCG major reported a 2.33 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 2,595 crore for the second quarter ended in September 2024 impacted by moderation in demand from the urban market.
Tata Steel was the top gainer among the Sensex constituents, surging around 6 per cent, followed by SBI, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, LT, Maruti, IndusInd Bank and HDFC. NSE Nifty touched a fresh intra-day high of 12,934.05.
Modest growth projections hits IT sector.

New Delhi-based IT software development and services provider, HCL Technologies, is set to invest Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion) in its new technology hub, which was inaugurated at Noida, near New Delhi. The company expects the new facility to generate over $1 billion from software exports annually, and is targeting a 30 per cent growth in revenues over the next five years.
The market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies hit a record high of Rs 429.32 lakh crore on Wednesday as the BSE benchmark Sensex ended higher amid a largely positive trend in global equities. The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 149.98 points or 0.20 per cent to settle at 76,606.57. During the day, it jumped 593.94 points or 0.77 per cent to 77,050.53.
